Field Report No. 1 · October 2026

Twelve pheasants in five evenings, on roads nobody records.

The question isn’t whether the countryside is changing. It’s whether anyone is keeping count.

A fixed evening survey of lanes and main roads in north Gloucestershire during the release season found twelve dead pheasants in five evenings. Eleven of the twelve dead pheasants lay on a single stretch of the A435. The quiet lanes beside the release area produced none.

The national roadkill database holds five records for these roads in ten years. That gap is the point of this report.

Our approach

Independent, rigorous and open.

  1. 1

    Consistent fieldwork

Fixed routes and schedules, so findings can be compared across seasons and years.

  2. 2

    Complete records

Every species and every outcome recorded, not just the ones that make a point.

  3. 3

    Shared with the official record

Our data goes to the county records centre and national datasets, so it informs decisions beyond our own reports.

Who we are

“I’ve watched the fields, the hedgerows and the animals in them change within my own lifetime. I see it from the saddle, on foot and on the road, and almost none of it is being recorded. So I started.”
